How To Sleep With Long Hair Comfortable?

by Suki Lee 20 Jul 2023 0 Comments

While wigs offer versatility and style, many wig wearers wonder whether it is safe to sleep with a wig on. After all, we spend a significant amount of time sleeping, and it is important to ensure that our hair remains healthy and undamaged. In this blog post, we will explore the potential risks of sleeping with a wig on and provide some tips to help you maintain healthy hair while wearing a wig.

It is essential to understand that wearing a wig to bed can potentially cause damage to both your natural hair and the wig itself. However, the extent of the damage depends on several factors, including the type of wig, the quality of the wig, and how you care for it. Let's delve deeper into these factors to gain a better understanding.

  • Type of Wig: There are various types of wigs available in the market, including synthetic wigs and human hair wigs. Synthetic wigs are constructed from artificial fibers and are generally less expensive than human hair wigs. While synthetic wigs are convenient and easy to maintain, they are more prone to damage, especially when exposed to heat or friction. On the other hand, human hair wigs are made from real human hair and are more durable and resilient. Human hair wigs can withstand more wear and tear, including sleeping with them on. Therefore, if you plan on sleeping with a wig, it is advisable to invest in a high-quality human hair wig to minimize the risk of damage.
  • Quality of the Wig: The quality of the wig plays a crucial role in determining its durability and resistance to damage. Cheaper wigs may not be constructed with the same level of care and attention to detail as higher-end wigs. Consequently, they may be more prone to tangling, shedding, and frizzing, especially when exposed to friction during sleep. Investing in a high-quality wig, whether synthetic or human hair, can significantly reduce the risk of damage and ensure that your natural hair remains healthy.
  • Caring for Your Wig: Proper wig care is essential to maintain its longevity and prevent damage. Before going to bed, it is advisable to brush your wig gently to remove any tangles or knots. This will help prevent further tangling and matting during sleep. Additionally, securing your wig in a loose braid or ponytail can help minimize friction and reduce the risk of damage. It is also important to use a satin or silk pillowcase, as these materials are less likely to cause friction and help preserve the wig's integrity. Avoid using cotton pillowcases as they can create friction and lead to tangling and breakage.

Things to avoid when sleeping with long hair

Before delving into the specifics of how you should use your long hair wig at night, it's best to start with what not to do! Here are three examples of the most common bad practices:

  • Sleeping with hair care products that contain alcohol (such as hairspray). The alcohol concentration in these products may promote dryness and ultimately make hair brittle and prone to breakage.
  • Wearing hair accessories, such as metal clips, hair extensions and elastic bands, to bed. These can lead to damaged hair, noticeable dents in the morning and increased friction with the bed fibers.
  • Going to bed with wet hair. When hair is wet, it is particularly susceptible because the chemical connections between keratin (proteins) within the hair follicle are weakened. Therefore, going to bed with wet hair, or just brushing wet hair hard, can distort the hair follicle and cause the hair to stretch, ultimately leading to hair damage.
